Laboratoire Oenologique Philis - Gigondas
As it's the case in lots of wine towns in France Gigondas has its own local Laboratoire Oenologique.
Recognizing the importance of having a laboratory in the local community the
Syndicat of AOC Gigondas already in 1970 established a building suited for the
purpose, and since 1973 the laboratory has been run by Gerard Philis and his
wife Elisabeth both educated as oenologs.
According to Mr. Philes the laboratory is well equiped with
devices to analyse the samples of wines brought to the laboratory by the clients,
which can be co-operatives, private wine growers, negociants or wine
agents.
Gerard Philis also visits the wine growers to give advice
about the work in the cellars or in the fields.
About 15.000 samples are brought to the laboratory for analyses per year. The
average analyse is resulting in 8 parametres per sample.
Beside these analyses telling the wine grower about the condition of his
wines, samples are analysed for export purpose. Some countries demand such
analyses to let the wine into the country. Espcially Japan but also Northern
America demand such analyses.
Below a series of photos from the laboratory. There are no
captions with the photos. The publisher of this web site dare not comment on which analyses the different devises are designed for.
