AOP  Cairanne

     

1929 The wine growing in the village The wine growing in the village had raised so significant that is was decided to create a cooperative in the village Cave de Cairanne.
1937 Cairanne became included in the appellation Cotes du Rhone.

1966 The best communes may call their wines Cotes du Rhone Village.
1974 The name of the commune may be added Cotes du Rhone Village Cairanne.
2016
Cairanne is recognized as a CRU by the name AOP Cairanne.

The new appellation includes red and white wines from Cairanne commune and covers about 80% of the area which previously covered Cotes du Rhone Village Cairanne. The potential area of the Village appellation was 1350 hectares and AOP Cairanne it is 1088 hectares.

The area of Cairanne commune is 22,51 km.  
The altitude vary from 89 to 339
metres.

Allowed grape varieties

Red wines:
Primary varietiy: Grenache
Secondary varieties: Mourvedre, Syrah.
Other allowed varieties: Bourboulenc, Vaccarése, Carignan, Cinsault, Clairette, Clairette Rose, Counoise, Grenache Blanc, Grenache Gris, Marsanne, Muscardin, Piquepoul Noir, Roussanne, Terret Noir, Viognier.

White wines
Primary varieties: Clairette, Grenache Blanc, Roussanne,.
Secondary varieties: Bourboulenc, Marsanne, Piquepoul Blanc, Viognier.

Rules for shares of grape varieties in the vineyards of a single property wanted to be declared as AOP Cairanne

Red wine
Grenache must count for at least 50%
Syrah and Mourvedre must together count for at least 20%
Other varieties may not exceed 30%
White varieties may not exceed 5%

White wine
Clairette must count for at least 30%
Grenache Blanc
must count for at least 20%
Roussanne
must count for at least 20%
White varieties may not exceed 20%

Rules for the blend (assemblage) in the single wine (cuvée)

Red wine
Grenache must count for at least 40% and Syrah and/or Mourvedre must be included

White wine
A cuvée have to be made from at least two of the primay varrieties. (Clairette, Grenache Blanc, Roussanne), which each of them may count for at least 20% of the blend. 
The share of secundary varieties (Bourboulenc, Marsanne, Piquepoul Blanc, Viognier) may not count for more than 30%, and none of those 4 varieties may count for more than 10%.

Other rules

Manuel harvesting is obligtory
The yield may not exceed 38 hl./ha. for red wines and 40 hl./ha. for white wines.
The volume of alkohol must be 12,5% for red wines and 12% for white.
