The property has a glorious past. Wines have been made at this
place for several hundred years. Often the owners has had connection to the
church. The three hats on the label refer to two bishops and a pope among the
forefathers of the Lançon familiy. A medal on the label refers to a medal
from Napoleon after the battle of Waterloo to one from the family. The three
bees on the label is a family weapon from the Middle Ages.
The first member of the family in France came from Italy in 1264 to serve
the pope in Avignon. His name was Barberini - the name today of the
special cuvées from the domain. The name Cornalia Constanza for a new
cuvée with debut in 2005 is also the name of an ancestor.
For several years the sons of Pierre Lançon, Jean and Michel Lançon, were
in charge at
the domain. Jean Lançon died a few years ago.
The next generation Florent Lançon son of Michel Lançon is now responsable at the domain. Cuvée Cornelia
Constanza is "his wine".
He also experiments with planting of rare
(but allowed) grape varieties such as Counoise, Clairette Rose, Grenache
Gris and Piquepol, allegedly to bring freshness to the wines. The domain covers 38 ha. AOC
Chateauneuf du Pape.
8 ha are planted with white varieties, and 30 ha with red varieties.
In Sabran in Gard the domain owns 5 ha of Cotes du Rhone. For the Cotes du Rhone
the name Domaine de la Solitude is not used
but instead Famille Lançon
No foudres are used for ageing
the red wines - "only" barrels.
