The property is one of the biggest in Chateauneuf du Pape. The first record of the name of the
chateau dates back to 1334: "Mourredon". The
latin name muntem retundum (the
round mountain) became in provencal Mourredon and later Mont Redon.
Anselme Mathieu (1828-1895), the wellknown poet who together the
author Frédéric Mistral founded le Félibrige to keep
the provençal language alive lived for a period of his life at
Mont Redon when the place was owned by his mother Claire Mathieu.
He called himself Marquis de Mont-Redon. His mother died around 1866,
when phylloxéra
destroyed all vineyards in
the village
The owners today are the 3th generation
at the property since 1923. That year a forefather of the two families
Henri Plantin acquiered the place mostly covering woodland. At
that time the vineyards covered only 2,5 ha. Plantin changed the
woods into vineyards and bought more vineyards.
Two daughters of Plantin married an Abeille and a Fabre and in this
way the two family names appeared on the domain.
Today the domain covers 174 ha of which 100 ha are vineyards of AOC
Chteauneuf du Pape.
In 1980 30 ha. in AOC Cotes du Rhone
were purchased and in 1997 a property in Roquemaure - the Lirac
appellation - with 21 ha.
340.000-360.000 bottles of red Chateauneuf du Pape and 100.000-110.000 bottles
of white Chateauneuf du Pape are produced each vintage. This means that
the production of white wine is relatively big volume.
The son of Didier Fabre Pierre Fabre is to day manager of the
estate. A daughter of
Jean Abeille also works in the
administration when three of her brothers works in other areas.
