Eugene Maret the grandfather of Michel
Maret bought the property in 1912 as a gift for his wife who was the
daughter of a wine grower in the area. His son Fernand Maret enlarged the
estate. In 1973 Michel Maret took over the property as third generation.
He was the one who named the estate Domaine de la Charbonnière from the
lieu-dit around the domain. The name means the
area of charcoal burning.
.
The fourth generation Veronique and Caroline have both been working at the
domain for some years and since the beginning of 2014 they have taken over
the responsability. Veronique has been responsible for the wine making since 2007. Mireille and Michel
still work hard at the domain.
Since 2000 most of the grapes have been destemmed, and since a few years
truncated wooden tanks have been used for fermenting of the red wines to
make them more enjoyable and fruity in their youth.
Through the last few years some investments have been made so the cellars
today fulfil all the conditions for a modern winery. Everything is very nice
and clean.
The property covers 18.5 ha of Chateauneuf du Pape, 4 ha of Vacqueyras (in Sarrians),
2 ha of Cotes du Rhone and 3 ha of IGP.
Since 2015 the vineyards have been certified agriculture
biologique.
