Jérôme Quiot died suddenly late November
2018 - he was born in 1951
The name "Old Lazaret" comes from munks "Lazarists"
who in the 17th century had a hospice for old, poor and disabled
persons on the place, where the domain is placed today. After the
plauge in 1720 which killed a third of the population
the buildings fell in disuse. At the beginning
of the 19th century the Quiot family bought these old buildings from the commune at
first for normal agricultural purpose. As years went
by more and more vines were planted. After the phylloxera crises in 1866 the
buildings were used as silk mill and this activity was important for the family
for about 30 years.
In 1871 the family purchased an old farm of 14 hectares in Caromb - Mont Ventoux
area.
From 1915 the name Vieux Lazaret was
used for the domain. One of the belongings to the family is an old castle (Lhers)
by
the river Rhone, where people had to pay taxes when they crossed the river.
The tower at this castle is on the labels from the domain.
The grand grand father of Geneviève Quiot founded in
1890 Domaine Houchard in Cotes de Provence. This domain was interited by Geneviève
and its 90 hectares became a part of the holdings of the Quiot family.
Jerome Quiot is the 10th generation of winegrowers in Chateauneuf
du Pape. With more than 200 ha. in the Rhone valley and Cotes du Provence
it's quite a big estate. In 2001 Quiot family became responsible for the neighbouring Domaine Duclaux
when the two children Florence and Jean Baptiste Quiot inherited
the domain when the last owner from the Duclaux family died. She was the
Gotmother of the two sieblings.
In 1999 a negociant firm
was created. From here the wines have been named "Jérôme Quiot Sélection". The range of these wines includes Chateauneuf du
Pape, Gigondas, Vacqueyras, Ventoux, Cairanne and Cotes
du Rhone.
In 2006 Chateau de Trignon
