The
father of the current owners, Antonin Faravel, was the son of a shepherd
and postman, who had inherited some fields in Gigondas, partly overgrown
with olives or garrigues. As
a 14-year-old boy Antonin in 1941 started to work at Pierre Amadieu.During
the years he ended up getting responsibility for field operations at
Amadieu, and during the 30 years he worked here, he was part of or was
responsible for planting or replanting of this domain's vineyards, which
today covers 127 ha in Gigondas. After
the winter of 1956, only a few olive trees survived, therefore Antonin in
his spare time began to clear the remains of olives and to plant vines on
his father's fields in Gigondas, located at an altitude of 350-500m. tilted
to the Dentelles de Montmirail and thus among the coolest terroirs in
Gigondas. Initially
Antonin sold the grapes to Amadieu,
but in 1978 he made and bottled some of the production. However, he continued to sell a part of it to Amadieu.
In
1985 Antonin's eldest son Gilles joined his father. He
"brought" with him 5 ha Beaumes
de Venise, from which the grapes until a few years ago have been sold to
the cooperative. In 1988 died Antonin, and in 1989 Thierry Faravel joined his brother after
since 1981 to have been working in the cellars of Amadieu.
The younger sister Josiane has since 2014 worked with her brothers and it will
probably be her you meet in their shop in Gigondas.
The
vineyards cover 9 ha of Gigondas, 5
ha of Beaumes de Venise
and 2.6 ha of Vacqueyras. They
are not certified agriculture biologique, but practice dictates that they
might be some time in the future.
