The property has belonged to the Saurel family for 5 generations. Eric Saurel and Christine took over the domain in 1986 after Eric's father, Max Saurel. The name Montirius is created from the letters in the names of Saurel's three children: Justine, Manon and Marius.
Since
1999 all their vineyards have been certified organic by ECOCERT and biodynamic by
Biovin.
The biodynamic principles play a decisive role for the work in the vineyards as well
as in the vinification process in the cellar.
The domain covers 63 ha; 16 ha
of
Gigondas, 23 ha of Vacqueyras, 10,5 ha Cotes du Rhone and 8,5 ha of IGP.
Half of the vines in Gigondas were planted by Gaston Saurel in 1925.
