Plan
de Dieu was formed during the last Ice Age. The
relatively "flat" area is bounded by the two rivers Aygues and
Ouvèze.
Aigues or
Eygues as the river is called in Drôme (border
between Drôme and Vaucluse), runs close to well-known wine villages
such as Cairanne, Saint-Roman-de-Malegarde, Saint-Maurice-sur-Eygues,
Vinsobres
It merge with
Rhone at Caderousse
Ouvèze merge with Rhone
south west
of Sorgues and runs close to or through Bedarrides, Jonquières, Violès,
Sablet and Vaison-la-Romaine

The name (Plan Dei) was used in 1326 in a contract
bethween farmers in Camaret and Travaillan regulating fields between the
landowner.
It's likely that the plaine got its name from nuns. The
biggest landowner today in the area is Domaine
Bois de Dames also use old nune related names for his domains Domaine de
l'Abbaye de Prébayon and Domaine de Dieumercy
