The appellation covers certain parcels in 2 communes, Vacqueyras and Sarrians.
It's in Vacqueyras you find the biggest concentration of domains and vineyards, even though three producers of Sarrians are among the most famous domains of the appellation Chateau des Tours, Montirius and Domaine le Sang du Cailloux.

The appellation includes red wines, rosé wines and white wines.

Allowed grape varieties

Red wines
Primary grape (cépage principal): Grenache.
Secondary grapes (cépages complémentaires): Syah og Mourvedre.
Other grapes (cépages accessoires):  Bourboulenc, Carignan, Cinsault, Clairette, Clairette Rose, Counoise, Grenache Blanc, Grenache Gris, Marsanne, Muscardin, Piquepoul, Roussanne, Terret Noir, Vaccarese and Viognier.

Rosé wines
Primary grapes (cépages principal) Cinsault, Grenache, Mourvedre and Syrah.
Other grapes (cépages accessoires): Bourboulenc, Carignan, Clairette, Clairette Rose, Counoise, Grenache Blanc, Grenache Gris, Marsanne, Muscardin, Piquepoul, Roussanne, Terret Noir, Vaccarese and Viognier.

White wines

Grenache, Syrah and Mourvedre must together count for at least 90%.
Grenache must count for at least 50%.
Mourvedre and Syrah must together count for at least 20%.
Other varieties (cépages accessoires) may not exceed 10%.
The share of white varieties may not exceed 5%.

Rosé wines
A single variety may not exceed 80%.
Other varieties  (cépages accessoires) may not exceed 10%.

White wines
A single variety may not exceed 80%.
