The cooperative was founded in 1929.
Today (2015) 53 members deliver grapes. In recent years the cooperative have
been trough serious financial troubles. In
February 2014 the cooperative had to
go into receivership and
was placed under administration of
the authorities. A reorganization
was approved by the court in Carpentras
in December 2015 after it
has signed a partnership with the
small negociant firm Les
Grandes Serres in Chateauneuf du Pape owned by the bigger
negociant company Gabriel Picard (Prima
Vinae) in Chassagne-Montrachet. The
suspension of payments led to
reduction of number of employees
which decreased from 42 to 14.
Turnover in 2015 was
5 million. €.
In 2019, an
understanding has been achieved with Cave Cécilia Chantecotes in Sainte Cécile
les Vignes on a merger of the two cooperatives that will be realized by the
autumn of 2020.
Cave Cécilia does not make wines above the Cotes du Rhone level.
The current director of Cave Cairanne Denis Crespo will become
director of the new collaboration.
Arguments for the merger
"Cette décision intervient dans un contexte de baisse
tendancielle des surfaces et des volumes traités. Avec ce
rapprochement, les deux structures, distantes de 6 km, visent à
diminuer leurs coûts de production et à optimiser leur outil de
production. « Les deux sites, complémentaires,
continueront de fonctionner et il n'y aura pas besoin
d'investissements supplémentaires », précise le
responsable professionnel. Cécilia sera plus spécialisée sur la
production des blancs et des rosés tandis que Cairanne restera sur
les rouges.
Pour la cave de Cécilia, l'objectif est aussi de hisser son niveau
qualitatif en se calquant sur le modèle de Cairanne :
« Avec cette fusion, nous nous donnons les moyens de faire les
meilleurs vins possibles, par une meilleure gestion des maturités,
des récoltes plus tardives, des sélections parcellaires plus
strictes, pour mieux les valoriser »,
